Logansport wins Class 1A title
NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Logansport scored 28 unanswered points in the second half to defeat top-seeded Haynesville 34-28 in the 2016 Louisiana High School Athletic Association Class 1A state football championship game in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Friday night.
Tied 28-28 with under a minute to go in the game, Dalton Shaw hit Joe Carraway for an 11-yard game-winning touchdown.
Trailing 28-12 heading into the fourth quarter, Logansport (14-0) cut the lead to 28-20 with 8:39 left in the game when Braylen Wilson hauled in a 9-yard touchdown pass from Shaw followed by a two-point conversion.
After stopping Haynesville (13-1) on fourth down on its ensuing possession, the Tigers tied it 28-28 when Debell Crawford scored from 9 yards out combined with the second consecutive successful two-point conversion.
After forcing the Tigers to punt on their first possession of the game, Haynesville drove 73 yards in 13 plays, culminating with a 6-yard touchdown run by Treyon Hunter. The senior tailback gave his team a 14-0 advantage early in the second quarter after returning a punt 62 yards for a touchdown.
The Tigers broke through on the scoreboard near the end of the second quarter when Crawford found the end zone from 3 yards out. Logansport missed the extra-point attempt, and the Haynesville lead stood at 14-6.
The championship for the Tigers is the second in school history.
