March 3 primary election: Texas GOP Senate race heads to runoff. Democrats too early to call

Today’s live updates have ended. Click here to see tonight’s election results.

Longtime Sen. John Cornyn and MAGA favorite Ken Paxton are heading to a May runoff in Texas’ Republican Senate primary, while Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico are in a close race for the Democratic nomination.

It was unclear how many eligible ballots remained to be counted in Dallas County, Crockett’s home base, after confusion about polling places and a flurry of court filings.

Voters across North Carolina, Arkansas and Texas took to the polls in primary elections Tuesday that marked the official beginning of the midterm elections.

The AP declares winners in elections across the country

  • Why AP calls races: The U.S. does not have a nationwide body that collects and releases election results. The AP fills this gap by compiling vote results and declaring winners in elections, providing critical information in the period between Election Day and the official certification of results, which typically takes weeks.
  • How the AP calls races: The AP’s race calls are not predictions and are not based on speculation. They are declarations based on an analysis of vote results and other election data that one candidate has emerged as the winner and that no other candidate in the race will be able to overtake the winner once all the votes have been counted.

Talarico stops short of declaring victory, says he’s confident in his movement

Talarico struck a confident and optimistic tone for what he called his “underdog campaign” during a brief speech to his supporters.

“This is a people powered movement to take on this broken, corrupt political system,” he said, declaring his intent not just to win an election but “fundamentally change our politics.”

Talarico spoke to his supporters just after midnight in Austin, with results still coming in for his race. Some of his backers held “Talarico for Texas or “Love thy Neighbor” banners provided by the campaign.

Talarico said he’s “confident in this movement we’ve built together” but stopped short of declaring victory. Every vote must be counted, he added, condemning “voter suppression” in Dallas County, where polling place changes left many voters confused.

“There is something happening in Texas,” Talarico said, alluding to the difficult odds he would face as the Democratic nominee in a state dominated by Republicans.

Talarico walked off the stage to Bad Bunny’s “Debí Tirar Más Fotos.”

GOP challenger Steve Toth ousts Rep. Dan Crenshaw in Texas

Toth, a member of the GOP’s hard-right caucus in the state House, had attacked Crenshaw over claims that the four-term incumbent was out of step with Trump’s agenda.

Crenshaw, 41, was Texas’ only sitting Republican House member whom Trump didn’t endorse in the primary.

The former Navy SEAL, known for an independent streak, had come under fire from corners of his party’s right flank over rejecting Trump’s false claims of winning the 2020 election. He also drew ire over criticizing some Republican politicians as “grifters” and “performance artists” who only tell voters what they want to hear.

Toth picked up a big endorsement late in the primary from Cruz.

Crenshaw, who lost his right eye when he was hit with an improvised explosive device in Afghanistan in 2012, has represented the Houston-area district since 2019.

Eric Flores wins GOP primary on Texas border over former Rep. Mayra Flores

Eric Flores, an Army veteran, carried Trump’s endorsement and won the Republican nomination for what is expected to be one of Texas’ most competitive House races in November.

He defeated Mayra Flores, who briefly held a U.S. House seat in the region after a surprising win in a 2022 special election that foreshadowed Republican gains along the Texas-Mexico border. Mayra Flores and Eric Flores are not related.

Eric Flores touted his experience as a federal prosecutor and as a National Guard officer during a 2018 border mission.

He will next face Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, one of five Democratic incumbents targeted by Texas Republicans when they redrew House district boundaries last year. Gonzalez is a moderate who has outperformed the top of the Democratic ticket.
