Total of 13 candidates vying for two council seats

MICHIGAN CITY — A total of 13 candidates have filed to fill two vacant seats on the Michigan City Common Council.

The caucus to fill those seats will take place 7 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room at the Michigan City Police Department. Each candidate will be afforded three minutes to address the precinct chairs/vice chairs, who will then vote.

Candidates for the 6th Ward seat, vacated by the resignation of former Council President Chris Schwanke, will be: Franklin Anderson, Jeff Deuitch, Ricky Jackson, Nancy Moldenhauer, Gene Simmons and Dalia Zygas. Only the four precinct chairpersons from the 6th Ward will vote for this seat.

Candidates for the At-Large seat, vacated by the late Al Whitlow, will be David Biela, Jeff Deuitch, Effie Fowler, Carolyn Harmon, Thomas Kulavik, Michael Mack, Abagael May, Nancy Moldenhauer, Johnny Stimley and Dalia Zygas. All 24 precinct chairpersons from across the city are eligible to vote for this seat.

If one of the three candidates who have filed for both seats win the first seat, they will be withdrawn from the other. If they lose the vote for the first seat, they will remain in the running for the second. La Porte County Democratic Party Chairman Jim Kimmel said the 6th Ward caucus will be first, followed by the At-Large caucus.

• Precinct 10: Mike Mack (Angela Mack).

• Precinct 11: Vacant (vacant).

• Precinct 12: Dan Dombrowsky (Pat Jasicki).
